How a VSME Report Improves Your EcoVadis Score
Until recently, an SME’s sustainability report and its EcoVadis assessment lived in separate worlds: you could hold a tidy VSME report and still start the platform’s questionnaire from zero. That changed with EcoVadis’s Q1 2026 methodology update, which formally recognises the VSME standard as reporting evidence.
The headline numbers: a report aligned with the VSME Basic Module earns up to 75 of 100 on EcoVadis’s reporting indicator, and a report covering Basic plus Comprehensive earns up to the full 100. This page explains what that recognition actually covers, what it does not, and the practical sequence for claiming the credit.
What EcoVadis Rewards, and Where Reporting Fits
EcoVadis scores are built from evidence across four themes (Environment, Labour and Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement), and within them the assessment looks for three kinds of proof: policies (commitments), actions (implementation), and results (measured outcomes you report). The full mechanics are in our EcoVadis questionnaire explainer.
The results layer is where small companies historically scored worst, because it wants exactly what most SMEs lacked: a structured, periodic report of sustainability figures. Ad-hoc spreadsheets and marketing-page claims score poorly as reporting evidence; a formal report scores well. The Q1 2026 update names VSME as such a report, which turns the EU’s standard SME format into scoring currency on the platform.
What the Recognition Covers
- A Basic Module report (B1–B11) — general information, energy and emissions, pollution, biodiversity, water, waste, workforce, and governance — earns up to 75 of 100 on the reporting indicator.
- Basic plus Comprehensive (C1–C9) — adding strategy, climate targets and risks, deeper workforce and human-rights content, and governance diversity — earns up to the full 100.
The gap between 75 and 100 is, in practice, the Comprehensive Module’s forward-looking content: climate targets (C3) and climate risks (C4) above all, the same two disclosures that banks weight most and that sit outside the EU’s value-chain cap. If EcoVadis matters to your customers, those disclosures now pay twice.
Note the boundary: the credit attaches to the reporting indicator, the part of the assessment that scores whether you formally report your performance. It is a meaningful component, not the whole scorecard.
What a VSME Report Does Not Do
Three honest limits, so the recognition is used rather than overclaimed:
- It does not replace the assessment. EcoVadis remains a declarative questionnaire with analyst validation; the VSME report is evidence inside it, not a substitute channel. Your customer’s request for an EcoVadis scorecard still means completing EcoVadis.
- It does not stand in for policies and actions. A report shows results. The policy documents (environmental, labour, ethics) and the implementation evidence still need to exist and be uploaded in their own right.
- It barely touches Sustainable Procurement. The VSME modules say little about what you require of your own suppliers, and that theme keeps its own evidence demands, such as a supplier code of conduct.
A VSME report is therefore the fastest single upgrade to a weak results layer, and no help at all for a missing policy layer. Most first-time EcoVadis scores need both.
How to Claim the Credit, Step by Step
- Produce the report from data you already gathered. If you have answered any ESG questionnaire this year, the figures exist. A free VSME report tool generates a finished Basic or Comprehensive report from your answers at no cost, which makes the 75-point tier available without spending anything.
- Add C3 and C4 if you can. A short, honest climate-targets disclosure and a site-level risk paragraph move you from the Basic tier towards the full-score tier, and serve your bank questionnaires in the same stroke.
- Upload the report as evidence wherever the assessment asks for sustainability reporting and measured results, alongside (not instead of) your policies and action evidence.
- Keep the underlying answers banked. The report is a yearly artefact; the answers behind it are the asset. An ESG answer bank keeps each figure with its source, so next year’s report, the EcoVadis refresh, and every customer questionnaire start from the same maintained set — the answer-once logic explained in one VSME report for every ESG request.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a VSME report guarantee a good EcoVadis medal?
No. The recognition lifts the reporting indicator, one component of a scorecard that also weighs policies, actions, and theme coverage. What it removes is the ceiling that used to sit over SMEs with no formal report. Pair the report with genuine policy documents and implementation evidence and the whole scorecard moves.
Do I need the Comprehensive Module for the credit?
No — a Basic-aligned report already earns up to 75 of 100 on the indicator. Comprehensive content, particularly the climate targets and risks disclosures, is what unlocks the range up to 100. A sensible path is Basic now, with C3 and C4 added when a bank, a major customer, or your EcoVadis ambition justifies them; see VSME Basic vs Comprehensive.
My VSME report is self-declared, with no audit. Does EcoVadis accept it?
Yes — VSME is a voluntary, unassured standard by design, and the recognition applies to VSME-aligned reports as such. EcoVadis’s own analysts review what you upload, as they do all evidence. The usual evidence rules still apply: the report should carry your company’s name, cover a stated period, and contain the figures it claims.
Does this recognition also apply to CDP or other platforms?
No. As of 2026 the VSME recognition is EcoVadis-specific; CDP publishes mappings to the ESRS but none to VSME. The practical overlap is still large everywhere, because the same energy, emissions, and workforce data feeds every platform, but the formal scoring credit described here belongs to EcoVadis’s methodology.
Key Terms
- EcoVadis reporting indicator — the component of the EcoVadis assessment that scores whether a company formally reports its sustainability performance.
- VSME Basic Module (B1–B11) — the core disclosure set; a Basic-aligned report earns up to 75/100 on the indicator.
- Comprehensive Module (C1–C9) — the extended disclosures whose addition raises the ceiling to 100/100.
- C3 / C4 — the climate-targets and climate-risk disclosures: the main substance of the Basic-to-Comprehensive step, and the data banks and buyers request most.
- Q1 2026 methodology update — the EcoVadis release that introduced formal recognition of VSME-aligned reports.
Conclusion
The EcoVadis recognition closes a loop the EU opened: VSME was already the legal reference for supplier requests, and now it is scoring currency on the biggest ratings platform too. For a small business the play is simple — produce the report from data you already hold, upload it as results evidence, and let one document raise both your questionnaire responses and your scorecard.
The report is free to generate; the credit is waiting in the methodology.
